Ontém visitei a horta comunitária na região metropolitana de Salvador em Lauro de Freitas, um projeto da Secretaria Municipal de Assistência Social e Cidadania em colaboração com o programas Fome Zero e Bolsa Família. Engenheira agrônoma, coordenadora do projeto há um ano Mariluce da Silva me apresentou a horta escolar orgânica e alguns alunos. Os participantes são beneficiarios do programa Bolsa Famíla e chegam para aula uma vez por semana. Cada dia útil tem uma turma, fazendo cerca de 50 alunos em total. A maioria dos participantes são mulheres! De manha tem aula teórica e de tarde os alunos aprendem na prática: cuidando das suas leiras, fazendo compostagem, construindo sistema de irrigação etc. O curso é gratuito e leva 5 mêses, no final terá período de comercialização dos produtos. Aos poucos os participantes podem fazer colheta em coentro, manjericão, abóbora, mamão, rúcula, alface, beterraba...Uma parte dos produtos - no momento 3 caixas por semana - é doado para creches.
O mais importante desse projeto é que os alunos recebem informação e aprendem na prática para poder cultivar suas áreas próprias tirando seu sustento e uma alimentação saudável! Este tipo de contribuição na forma do projeto do município é muito significativo e legal. Com o crescimento rápido das áreas urbanas e aumento da parte dos cidadões vivendo na pobreza, a agricultura urbana tem virado um assunto atual. A produção de alimentos nos quintais e outras áreas urbanas contribue ao auto-consumo e pode ser praticado para gerar renda. Quem quiser visitar, a horta fica atrás da Restaurante Popular de Lauro de Freitas. A cidade de Salvador nã tem esse tipo de iniciativa pública ainda! Que tal no entorno da Vila Brandão?
Yesterday I visited an organic community garden in Lauro de Freitas, metropolitan area of Salvador. The project is offered by the "municipal secretary of social assistance and citizenship" to beneficiaries of the governamental aid program Bolsa Família and is part of the Fome Zero Program. Agronomist and coordinator of the project Mariluce da Silva showed me the garden and some students, who come to the class once a week. Each day has its own group of students, about 50 participants in total - more women than men! The days consist of a theoretical morning class and practice in the afternoon, students taking care of their allotments, irrigation, composting etc. The course is for free of charge and takes 5 months, including a period of comercializing the products in the end. Little by little the participants are harvesting basilicum, coriander, pumpkin, papaya, beetroot, rucola and others partly for their own consumption and partly for the municipality. At the moment, 3 crates of vegetables are donated to kindergardens weekly.
The most important in this project is the preparation of the students to have the knowledge and hands-on practice to cultivate their on areas for self-support and a healthy diet. This kind of contribution from the municipality is a significant way of improving the poor urbanites lives. The rapid growth of cities with increasing poverty rates makes urban agriculture a crucial issue. Food production in backyards and other urban can contribute to family food security and/or creating income. If you'd like to pay a visit, the community garden of Lauro de Freitas is located behind the Restaurante Popular (serving 3000 government subsidied meals per day). The city of Salvador doesn't have such a public project yet! What about the surroundings of Vila Brandão?
